My mother had a fun day today. She and I work at the same store in the mall, and though I wasn't working today, she related this story to me.
A woman came in and made a large purchase using a $500 American Express Traveler's Check. This woman was perfectly nice and normal acting, she even signed up for one of our store's reward's cards, where you earn points on purchases and get certificates in the mail.
As it turns out, however, the $500 Traveler's Check she'd used to pay was a counterfeit, so the cops had to be called, and everyone had to give statements and all that. This woman, who is now a thief, had signed up for our card, remember. To sign up for our rewards card you give us your name, address, phone number and email address.
This woman stole $400 worth of merchandise and knowingly gave us her personal information so we could go and find her when we found out what she'd done.
